About Zaakirah
I started my career as a foundation phase teacher but soon realised that many learners are not achieving their full potential because of their emotional, behavioural and academic difficulties. Many of these learners were not receiving the attention that they desperately needed and I felt that I could make a difference.
I am a registered educational psychologist working in private practice and part time at Harambee Youth Employment Accelarator. I have also had the opportunity to develop a pro social learner workbook for the Department of Social Development's programme for diversion and I have conducted multiple workshops for the Department of Education on dyslexia and on the links between neurology and reading.
My field of interest has always been learning disabilities and school readiness. I have completed my honours research on “teachers’ perceptions of LD” and this research has been published in the Journal of Child and Adolescent Mental Health.
I ran workshops for teachers on various topics such as school readiness, classroom management and learning difficulties at various schools. I conducted my internship at both a private and government remedial school. At both of these sites, I worked in a multi-disciplinary team. The professionals which I interacted with on a daily basis were remedial therapists, a psychometrist, an occupational therapist, a social worker and other psychologists.
I had the pleasure of working with a wonderful supervisor who exposed me to various interventions namely rational emotive therapy, solution focussed therapy, psychodynamic interventions and narrative therapy.
